Windi Apriani
Windi Apriani is a Bandung-based artist who graduated from the Bandung Institute of Technology’s Faculty of Fine Art and Design with a degree in painting. She wins awards including Gudang Garam Competition-Indonesia Art Award (GG-IAA) as the Young Emerging Artist in 2013, Yayasan Seni Rupa Indonesia and as a finalist at the Soemardja Art Award 2011, Galeri Soemardja, Bandung Institute of Technology.

Windi Apriani’s works appear to be simple in nature—presentations of her self over canvas—but on the same note distinctive and novel. The manifestation of Windi as well as the objects around her appear on the canvas as categorically different from paintings or drawings. In fact, the distinctive qualities that appear in Windi’s work are resulted by her particular technique of cross-stitching in pen. This technique is not commonly applied to the genre of photorealism on canvas. It is because of this that Windi’s works do not initially appear to stand out, but rather invite the audience to come close and observe the suface of her canvases. In accordance with her technique, Windi’s works seem to approach drawing concepts more so than painting. Even so, it would not be erroneous to refer to her works as paintings, as they are created on canvas, and one may also sense a subtle shading of colors on various parts of the canvas itself. Windi’s works may contain two possibilities, as drawing as well as paintings. It may be said that categorizing Windi’s works may not be of utmost priority, but rather the deeper concepts she intends to express.
